Trend
The close of 175.40 is 10.4% (2.07 ATR) below the 21-day average of 195.68, which is still falling, so short-term momentum is down. It is 6.1% (1.17 ATR) below the 50-day average of 186.86, which is still rising, so the intermediate uptrend is intact but pulling back. The 200-day average is 153.60, 14.2% below the close.
Bull case
- Revenue mix is broadening. U.S. commercial revenue ($984M) passed U.S. government revenue ($953M) for the first time, and commercial revenue grew 148% YoY. Demand is less dependent on government awards.
- The installed base is expanding. Net dollar retention of 165% (reported by Zacks) means existing customers are spending more. Full-year revenue guidance was raised to about $8.53B against roughly $8.2B expected. Together these give revenue visibility even if new bookings slow.
- Management's explanation for the TCV slowdown points to a timing effect. The CFO said several eight-figure deals were shorter than usual as customers adopted new sovereign AI products, and that duration and size are expected to rise over time. This is a company claim, not yet evidence. If Q4 bookings show longer durations, the bear case weakens.
Bear case
- Valuation is extreme against earnings. Trailing non-GAAP P/E is about 153 (TipRanks), against a sector median of 23.3, roughly 6.6 times the median. Forward P/E is quoted at 86 to 121 depending on the source. The stock is priced for sustained high growth.
- Bookings growth decelerated sharply. Total contract value rose 6% YoY, down from 49% in Q2. U.S. commercial TCV rose 11%, down from 153%. Revenue growth in future quarters depends on bookings, and the stock fell after a beat-and-raise quarter. The Substack review also reports U.S. commercial remaining deal value up only 4% sequentially versus 27% in Q2, but that is one opinion source.
- Price is trending down against its recent high. The close is 16.1% below the 52-week high of 209.05, set 17 sessions ago. Seven of the last ten sessions closed lower. The stock is down 7.4% over one month, against IGV at -6.4% and SPY at -2.6%. IGV's 63-session correlation with PLTR is 0.79, so the software sector is currently the relevant driver, and it is weak.
Evidence gaps: The fundamentals request returned a 404, so no provider-verified P/E, margins, debt or cash-flow data is available. Valuation figures come from news articles that disagree with each other. Consensus EPS appears as $0.39, $0.40, $0.41 and $0.34 across sources. Insider selling of more than $97M in the prior 90 days is reported, but its size relative to holdings and its 10b5-1 status are not stated, so I have not used it.
Reconciliation
Coverage is mostly positive on the results and raises targets (average around $230), while the price fell after the report. I follow the price: the market is reacting to bookings, which the thesis research has not resolved. The targets were set in response to a move of only about 0.3 ATR from pre-earnings levels, so they are not stale, but they are opinions and are not used as triggers.
Decision
Asked: I don't own it. I'm considering buying it for the long term.
- Action: no-action
- Condition: Buy only on a daily close above 186.86, the 50-day average, which would mean reclaiming the intermediate trend.
- Timing: The key question (whether bookings duration recovers) cannot be answered before the Q4 report on 2027-02-01, and the short-term trend is still down. Waiting accepts a cost: if the stock reclaims 186.86, entry will be up to 6.5% higher than today, and a correct thesis may go unfilled. I accept that cost rather than owning the stock through a falling 21-day average on a question the data cannot yet answer.
- Distance: 186.86 is 6.5% above the close, or 1.17 ATR (ATR14 = 9.78). That is a routine move, roughly a one-standard-deviation event, and it can occur within the review window.
- If-not-met: If there is no close above 186.86 by 2026-11-10, stay out. Reassess after the Q4 report (estimated 2027-02-01), when the TCV and duration question should be answered.
- Invalidation: This call is wrong if PLTR closes above 186.86 and holds for several sessions with Q4 commentary still pointing to structurally lower deal durations, or if the stock falls below 165.62 with no change in the fundamental picture. Either outcome would show the market's read differs from the thesis.
- Forecast: 0.52. The probability that PLTR's total return beats SPY through the first close after the 2027-02-01 earnings report (61 sessions). The edge is small: revenue momentum and a 3-month relative strength of +12.7% against SPY support the upside, while extreme valuation, unresolved bookings and a falling 21-day average hold it near 0.50. A clear read on Q4 durations would move it most.
Technical analysis: computed from daily prices as of 2026-11-03. Not an input to the decision above: each is scored against SPY on its own.
- MACD (12, 26, 9): BEARISH, below its signal line, crossed 12 sessions ago (2026-10-16). Line -0.85, signal 2.42, histogram -3.27 and widening.
- Awesome Oscillator (5, 34): BEARISH, below zero, crossed today (2026-11-03). -5.54 and falling.
- Chaikin Money Flow (20): BULLISH, buying pressure: volume is backing the up days, crossed 7 sessions ago (2026-10-23). +0.10 and rising.
Review triggers
- Review-by: 2026-11-10, CPI (October 2026, 08:30 ET). This is the first major market print after the post-earnings reset and follows the 2026-11-06 payrolls release. It is 5 sessions ahead, so the price triggers must lie within 2·√5 ≈ 4.5 ATR (about ±43.7). The nearest PLTR-specific event is beyond this window.
- Price-above: 186.86 (50-day average, +6.5%, +1.17 ATR)
- Price-below: 165.62 (latest close minus 1 ATR; −5.6%)
- Volume-above: 112,165K shares (volP90K; the 10%-of-sessions threshold, which is more than four times the 50-day average of 25,170K). A print above this level would signal an event-driven move in either direction.
